Our 12 mile hike to Mount Wilson
Hey, sorry for this late post.
I mentioned it briefly at my last post that my hubby and I went for a long 12 mile-8.5 hour hike last Saturday to Mount Wilson via Chantry Flats.
According to this source, there are several trails to go up there and the one we took was from Chantry Flats, also known as Sturtevant Trail.
So the path we took was from 1-8 and reverse the route on the way back.
Believe me, it was quite challenging.
The last time we did this kind of hike was 4-5 years ago and that time we weren’t exactly as in shape as the way we are now. But at the same time, we were 4-5 years younger than we are now.
Anyway, we got up before the crack of the dawn like around 5am because the parking got packed very early like around 7am. The hike place is 30-35miles away from our home. Plus I needed to do some kind of HIIT cardio prior going since I just had my Carb Nite on Friday.
I didn’t pack much food. Pretty much 30 minutes after the HIIT, I had my post workout whey protein powder and I powered thru the entire hike with only some sip of hot tea and water. We started the hike around 8am and didn’t get to the top like around noon.
We’re finally HERE!
After waited about 30 minutes, I had my “first meal”. 1 canned albacore tuna, 2 hardboiled eggs with 2 tsp dijon mustard and splash of lemon juice, seasoned with aleppo chili pepper flakes.
Then we walked around at top. My clothes were sort of soaked from the sweats but at the same time the air was pretty chilly. So I was hot and cold at the same time. I was hoping I wouldn’t get sick!
If you think going up would be hard, coming down actually felt more challenging to me! I didn’t say that climbing up wasn’t painful. In fact I felt my glutes and hamstrings were crying and begging to take mini breaks on the way up.
But when coming down, my calves and knees were screaming non stop! Granted my calves were quite tight and very sore for the next 4-5 days. At that night, I couldn’t even squat down.
On our way, we encountered this little guy.
We tried our best not to walk too fast or else he’d spray his stinky gas. For a good 10 minutes, he was walking in front of us, on our trail until finally he decided to take a detour. Phew!
Anyway, on our way back to our car which was parked away from the parking lot since we didn’t get there early enough, we were greeted with this view.
It was worth it!
On our way home, I had my 3rd snack which actually packed with me throughout the hike. (no pic! It was way too dark- basically 3oz of cooked ground beef with some seaweed snack)
After we got home, I craved vegetables & bacon so much that I sautéed 6 cups of chopped bok choy cooked in bacon grease and 1 fried egg.
Overall it was a good hike!
I’m surprised I actually didn’t feel that much hunger during the entire hike, well maybe a little bit during noon and then in the end of the hike.
We plan to do this kind of hike at least once a month before summer comes. An in between, we can always do half day hike by exploring different trails at the same place since we bought one year pass, gotta utilize it as much as possible!
Do you like to hike?

I’ve never done Mt Wilson via Sturtevant, just Old Mt Wilson Trail in Sierra Madre. It’s my favorite hike! I miss hiking…I didn’t go while pregnant & feel weird about hiking with my 2 mo old in a carrier. Once he’s older, I can’t wait to introduce him to the hill 🙂
Aww, what a beautiful trail! And the view from above is just amazing!
I like hiking and have done it quite a lot since I moved here, because Heidelberg lies within a small mountain range, and there are beautiful forests just a few steps away from my door. The way up is hard, but I always find the way down much harder, too!
Seriously that hike down killed my calves completely. My calves were so sore for a good 4-5 days. Not to mention my big toes are still a bit swollen due to me kicking some of the rocks while walking. Sorry if it was too graphic.
That looked like an awesome day. And I’m getting hungry looking at the food. I’m glad I know that when I come to L.A. they’ll be another hiker who eats the way I do!!
