Homemade Tomato Sauce/Paste
A while back I made Homemade Pasta Sauce, which was great. But today I decided to try making generic tomato paste/sauce which I could use for any dishes other than pasta sauce. This will be great to make in large batch and freeze them for future use.
Homemade Tomato Sauce/Paste
Ingredients:
6 ripe roma tomatoes
1/2 garlic bulb
1 medium onion
2-3 shallots (I didn’t have any in hand but it’ll be great)
1 Tbsp balsamic vinegar
3 pitted soaked medjool dates or any fruit of your choice (apple sauce would be great)
1/4 cup lemon juice
1-2 tsp Red Boat Fish Sauce (optional but will make it yummy)
Dash of salt
1 tsp black pepper
1-2 tsp anatto powder
Directions:
1. Chop the tomatoes, garlic, shallots and onion coarsely.
2. Puree some garlic, onion, shallots, soaked medjool dates and some of the tomatoes in your food processor
3. Heat the skillet with avocado oil (or high heat cooking oil of your choice) in medium high- saute the chopped onions until translucent
4. Add the rest of the ingredients and cook on medium high heat for about 10 minutes, then reduce the heat to medium. Cook uncovered until most liquid evaporated. Season accordingly.
5. When you see most liquid has evaporated, you’re done!

Hi Jos! Just finished this meal (cooking and eating). I used turkey breasts, finely chopped, and for the sauce (lack of ingrediences) I did not use:
3 pitted soaked medjool dates or any fruit of your choice (apple sauce would be great) – did not have anything
1-2 tsp Red Boat Fish Sauce (optional but will make it yummy)
1-2 tsp anatto powder – don’t know what that is, but I used paprika powder
It turned out soooooo good! Yum yum yum, I still don’t have my camera, so I can’t tweet you a picture as usual 🙂 I have plenty left for tomorrow and the day after tomorrow (or dinner, we will see…) 🙂 Thanks again for a great meal!!! Your blog is my number one cookbook!!!
Aww thx so much Nina, glad you like the tomato sauce 😀 Anatto powder is basically to give that deep red color to the tomato sauce, won’t affect the taste.
Aww. Another thing I want to make! And the addition of dates s really fancy! 😀
